Presenter: Jennifer Doris M. Ed, ECMP AP, Early Childhood Manager, Family Resource Center of Central NH, Lakes Region Community Services
Workshop Description: Early childhood and medical professionals will receive training on the administration and scoring of two screening tools: ASQ and M-CHAT
ASQ—ASQ stands for “Ages & Stages Questionnaire”. It is a developmental and social-emotional screening tool for children from one month to 5 ½ years. The ASQ, known for being highly reliable and valid, looks at strengths and trouble spots, educates parents about developmental milestones, and incorporates parents’ expert knowledge about their children.
M-CHAT—M-CHAT stands for “Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers”. It is validated for screening toddlers between the ages of 16 and 30 months of age to assess risk for autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The M-CHAT can be administered and scored as part of a well-child check up or used by other professionals and specialists to assess risk for ASD.

In planning a training, participants will be able to ensure that the needs and interests of their staff and their program are addressed. We acknowledge that parents are children’s first teachers and the most important people in their lives. When a difficult situation arises during our relationship with parents it is reassuring to know that there are ways to negotiate these choppy waters. This workshop will assist the participants in developing some strategies for effective communication while appreciating parent perspectives. Active listening, positive pre-suppositions, and problem solving techniques, and ideas about how to initiate conversations in a non-threatening and respectful manner are some of the topics covered. Go home feeling empowered and reminded that parents are our partners.
To register, call Melanie Mallett at 752-1113 ext 3066 or email mmallett@ccsnh.edu
When registering, please state which location you prefer: Berlin or Littleton.

5/23/12 What is dramatic play and why is it critical to the developmental needs of our children? Do you have a dramatic play area that needs life breathing into it? Do you wish you had a post office in your classroom, but don’t feel like you have the space, or resources to make it happen? Then this is the workshop for you. Learn practical hands on ideas which don’t break the bank, but bring our dramatic play area, and in many cases your whole classroom alive with new activities and materials your children are going to love. Limited to 45-50 participants.
